Photos from mostly Danish photographers

Here’s an edited version of a post I made elsewhere in the fall…

Nicolai Fuglsig. 1998. Kids in Muslumvo, Russia – an area heavily affected by Chernobyl. This photo was shot in his final year as a student at the Danish School of Journalism. The series was highly celebrated until it was revealed that many photos were staged. “He is one of the best visual communicators I have ever met but it is very good that he is no longer doing photojournalism.” He’s directing commercials now. Maybe you’ve seen one of them.

James Nachtwey. 2001. Yeah.

Martin Parr. 1995-1999. From Common Sense. I think my sister took this exact photo of our old cocker spaniel (RIP).

Stephan Vanfleteren.

Erik Refner.

Erik Refner. From the Rockabillies series. This guy also graduated from the Danish School of Journalism.

Joachim Ladefoged. From the Body Building series. Another graduate of the Danish School of Journalism. He’s a VII member and spoke to my class when I was there. “You either have balls or a telephoto.”

Anton Corbijn. 1999. Kylie Minogue.

W. Eugene Smith. 1948. From the Country Doctor series.

Lars Tunbjörk. c2000. From The Office series.

Richard Billingham. 1995. Untitled.

Peter Granser. 2000. From the Sun City series.

William Eggleston. 1971. Halloween.

Anders Petersen. 2005. From the Gap (France) series.

Nick Waplington.

Larry Sultan.

You should also check out Trine Søndergaard and Charlotte Oestervang, two more Danish photographers doing awesome stuff.

I wonder when I’ll stop posting about Denmark…

Recent music photos

It has been a while that I’ve gone to a show to shoot photos but as Canada thaws for another summer, bands start touring again. Earlier this month, I saw Montréal’s Pas Chic Chic and two nights ago, Montréal’s CPC Gangbangs played with Memphis’ Jay Reatard. All excellent bands!

Here’s a photo of Jay Reatard and his hair. Click the links above for more photos.

If you’re in Ottawa this weekend, there’s an iPod Battle tomorrow night (Saturday) at Babylon. Not really sure who the teams are but it promises to be pretty silly.

Bonne fin de semaine!

Disorganized Photobooth

For the last few months, I’ve been doing a photobooth at Disorganized, an appropriately named monthly party hosted on the first Friday of every month at Babylon in Ottawa by Fool’s Gold’s Jokers of the Scene. The line up this month is one of the most packed to date and if you don’t already know, know now that this party is going to set the new season off right! Look:

Rye Rye (M.I.A., Blaqstarr, Diplo, Mad Decent, BALTIMORE)
DJ Sega (Mad Decent, Hollertronix, PHILLY)
Contra (Santogold, Spank Rock, M.I.A., MIAMI)
Huggs (M.I.A., MONTRÉAL/LOS ANGELES)

Ryan Stec will be VJ’ing too which is always awesome. So come say hi to me and get in front of my lens.

PunkOttawa.com is also celebrating its seventh year this Friday at End Hits with two shows by one of Canada’s best hardcore bands, Cursed. Go buy their latest record III!
