Small show and a bigger one.

Saturday was the opening for the Urban Eyes show at La Petite Mort gallery. It’s only up until Thursday so be sure to check it soon! It’s pretty rad to be part of this group show. So many different sets of eyes on one over arching theme.

Here’s a photo Tony took of the wall. There’s about 30 more photos I think. Mine is the baskeball hoop in the bottom centre. This hoop has a pretty big story for me but I think the fact that its backboard was replaced by a No Trespassing sign sums it up pretty well. 15 years ago, this was a neighbourhood hotspot. No one really comes here anymore though.

Here’s my photo bigger…

Madonna said it best: “This used to be my playground. This used to be my childhood dream.”

You can read more about the opening on Tony’s blog. Unrelated but watch the video and look at Michelle’s photos too.

Walking around with the disposable camera I was given for the exhibit was an interesting challenge. Given the limitations,  getting a good frame out of 27 exposures on 800 iso film using a fairly wide lens with an unknown aperture size (8? 5.6? 4?), I had very little to rely on in terms of control but whatever I made, I knew it had to count.  I was racking my brain for something original and I think I got a bit ahead of myself. I wont go in complete detail but I had initially acquired 18 helium balloons for a related experiment that eventually failed. In the end, I opted for simplicity which is often how I work best (but I normally have to make things hard for me before deciding this). I might retry what I attempted next summer though.  It was still fun and also funny.

Here’s a photo of me that Alex took before my spirit was broken by the reality that the experiment would not work. Note: The balloons knew it was doomed from the get go.

Anyway, since I got my first cell phone two years ago, I’ve quite enjoyed having a camera always at my disposal. Good for location scouting and generally capturing weird happenings. The lens might not be sharp at all and the auto settings might play tricks on you but you can also play some tricks on the camera. Here are three photos I shot in November.

Lately, I’ve been towing my mom’s old Minolta that contains a half-finished roll that probably expired three years ago. Curious to see what’s on it.

Finally, I’ll have more photos up at Wurm Gallery (319 Lisgar) from December 12, 2008-January 14, 2009. Come to the vernissage on December 12 from 7pm until midnight. No promises but I will probably make delicious vegan bite size snacks like chocolate peanut butter cups and also sesame balls (kind of like those Chinese ones but also a bit like halvah).

This will be the first time that some photos from my 17-days on the CCGS Louis S. St. Laurent will be exhibited in a gallery space which is something I’m pretty excited about because I don’t think DFO was actually super keen on having polar bears with bloody faces in their annual report. Roar.

Besides that, I’ve got some architecture stuff going on these days.  Collaborating with Norml Clothing in Ottawa on some stuff this month too. December’s going to be fun. January too! 2009, here we come.
