Laurier Lapierre & tearsheets & Victoire

Slayer

Matias recently wrote about an awesome blog called Satan Laughs As You Eternally Rot that collects images of Slayer’s logo appearing in random and modified places around the world. This blog is really a testament to the Slayer’s success in graphic design in making a memorable logo that anyone can carve out anywhere and with anything. The blog hasn’t been updated in a little while. I doubt this is due to a lack of worthwhile content.

Here’s my fave:

Slayer

I was probably six years old the first time I saw the Slayer logo. One of the older students had branded the grade 5 door of my school with it and “Pink Floyd” written in a similar fashion. I had no idea what either of these meant at the time but I was eager to find out.

This all reminds of of something I made about four years ago. I thought I was so funny. Check it out:

It took me forever to make those letters.

Go Skateboarding Day – June 21

Wild in the Streets

This Sunday, June 21 at 12 noon, if you have a skateboard, you should come to Top of the World (158 Rideau, Ottawa) and take part in Wild in the Streets, an international event that started in New York City in 2004 on Go Skateboarding Day. Basically, it’s a mass skate from the skateshop all the way to McNabb Skatepark (total distance, about 3km). I think there’s going to be a BBQ and some other stuff at McNabb.

When I’m not taking photos, editing photos or planning stuff with clients, I’m probably skateboarding (or riding my bike, I guess). In fact, I just spent the last four Sundays teaching skateboard lessons at McNabb Skatepark to kids aged 5-12. Skateboarding and skateboard culture really shaped me as a kid. Basically, it is what introduced me to photography and art and video and a bunch of other really cool stuff that engulfs my life now.

Totally awesome and I just want to share that awesomeness all the time. Come on Sunday!

Afterwards, be sure to check out activities going on around Ottawa for National Aboriginal Day.

GOING GAGA – rad festival in Ottawa

GAGA Weekend starts tomorrow. Here’s what’s up on the lineup:

a PIZZA PARTY on THURSDAY
a HOUSE PARTY on FRIDAY
a MATINÉE SHOW on SATURDAY

FULL LINEUP INFO

I’m especially excited for the matinée at the Meat Locker on Saturday. Some of Ottawa’s best newish bands are playing this marathon.

The blog Apt613 did a pretty good write up about it you can read too.

Here’s also a great little audio bit that Apt613 did with Ian, the brains behind GAGA:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Stylustsss

Barletta was supposed to DJ on Friday but Mexican airport authority liked him too much to send him back to Canada immediately.

Total bummer but in his place, Drastik and Illo repped hard and kept it going late on four turntables.  The party was only missing Mr. Tom Wrecks for a full cast. Soon, hopefully! Drastik should be out with a new mix fairly soon. Stay tuned.

At the end of the month, MSTRKRFT are playing next to a lake. Paddle boats optional. Life jackets mandatory.

Next Disorganized is the sixième anniversaire! Who doesn’t love a July birthday?

Notre Victoire

Victoire, this dope (mostly women’s) clothing store on Dalhousie at St. Patrick in Ottawa, launched a web store a few months ago and they asked if I would shoot some photos for it. The bosses of this boutique are hardly ordinary and despite my suggestion that product photos shot in studio against solid backgrounds might help sales, the only thing coming back to me was “No. We’re taking you to the country and buying you sorbet on the way home.”

OK fine… The customer is always right. Check out the location…

Also, Victoire will soon be celebrating their troisième anniversaire which is young but when shops like this open and close more often than I get haircuts, major pats on the back go to les filles continuously making their business baby grow. Obviously something is working.

There will be a flyer advertising the anniversary soon (I think there will be a party and a mix CD?) but in the mean time, here are some photos I from the webstore. Don’t forget to check it out and also their blog.

Oh PS: One brand they carry is Species by the Thousands, makers of some fine clothing and interesting jewelry pieces. Out of Brooklyn, they’re one of the only non-Canadian lines at Victoire but the spot is well deserved. I’ve talked about bearded faces on shirts before but thanks to Victoire, I now own one. Behold, la pièce de résistance. Comfy shirt too. I think it’s made by Alternative Apparel using some organic cotton mystery blend.

It might be from Brooklyn but I find there is something oddly centennial-era Canada about the illustration. Farley Mowat meets the Ookpik or something… Non?

Huggs on a flyer

A designer working for DJ LA*Jesus in Chicago used a photo I shot last year of Montreal/L.A. DJ Huggs in a flyer.

Pretty into it!
